Dear colleagues
This year's Labour Day is set in an unusual reality. Some keywords:
- War in Ukraine
- Thousands of refugees
- Companies in Switzerland experience "post-Covid upswing"
- Lack of employees
- Savings plans of companies in our industry
- Supply bottlenecks
- Inflation after increased energy and fuel prices
Within all this chaos, the trade unions are calling for participation in the numerous 1st of May rallies. This year's slogan is "Peace, Freedom, Solidarity | 1st of May, 2022 in Switzerland" (https://mai2022.ch lists all 1st of May demonstrations and rallies with information on location, time and speakers).
We must uphold and defend our values if
- we meet people on the run,
- the wage gap continues to widen,
- the tax policy favors those who are already privileged,
- old-age provision provokes injustice,
- companies try to abuse crises to reorganize and worsen working conditions.
As trade unions, we know that only our unbroken resistance to any kind of injustice will enable our society to progress and develop further. This is our annual call: "Long live international solidarity!" It carries a frighteningly urgent significance this year.
