SEV-GATA demand Lufthansa’s clear commitment to Basel

Planned job cuts at Euroairport Basel go too far

Today Lufthansa Technik Switzerland (LTSW) informed its staff that it is planning to cut 265,5 of the currently remaining 339,5 fulltime jobs during the period between May and December. The union SEV-GATA considers redundancies to such an extent exaggerated and expects that the Lufthansa group takes social responsibility.

Already in the past Lufthansa Technik Group with more than 26'000 employees worldwide has cut a great number of jobs at its Basel-based plant. Of the originally existing 500 jobs at the time this section of Swiss was outsourced in 2008 already more than one third has disappeared so far. Now up to four fifth of those left over are supposed to disappear too. SEV-GATA will take a close look at the question as to what extent the strong Swiss Franc and the market can really be made responsible.

Lufthansa bears social responsibility
SEV-GATA president Philipp Hadorn is disappointed that the group doesn’t stick to the promises made in the past. „SEV-GATA appeals to LTSW and the worldwide Lufthansa group to do their utmost to keep as many of the threatened jobs as possible in Basel and to find socially acceptable solutions for those concerned. We demand Lufthansa’s clear commitment to its location in Basel.“
SEV-GATA has got time to speak out against the planned mass redundancies in the course of the statutory consultation process by 30 April. In the middle of April a staff meeting will be held in order to talk with those concerned about how to proceed.

SEV-GATA (Groundstaff Aviation Technics and Administration) is the air transport department of the SEV, the transport staff union.
