Dear Colleagues
IATA expects passenger numbers to grow by 6.7 % in 2025. The aviation industry is still on the rise. Large corporations such as Lufthansa are expanding their group and capacity. However, the labour market seems to have dried up. Although this may have a positive effect on wage developments in the longer term, it currently means a large, sometimes almost unmanageable workload for many employees.
SECO Petition
Health protection for employees is a cornerstone of trade union work. The statutory provisions provide the framework conditions for the protection of employees. Historically, 7:7 operations were granted special conditions for continuous night shifts. Nevertheless, the responsible office (SECO) already denied such exemptions several years ago. The most recent decision states that the current 5:5 operation will be tolerated until the end of 2025. The Swiss employees affected in Geneva and Zurich reached out to us with their respective petitions, the aim of which was to maintain a 5:5 system in the future. 74% of those affected in Geneva, and a good 90% of those in Zurich, have signed these petitions. Congratulations to the initiators! We are committed to supporting this issue.
We have already contacted the SECO office about it. Both SEV-GATA and Swiss are aware that many shift workers and their families do not reside in Switzerland long term. Therefore, a suitable shift planning system is a prerequisite for their employment with Swiss. SECO states that the 5:5 system in itself does not pose a problem, but demand that Swiss reduce the number of working hours. At the kickoff meeting concerning the shift scheduling in mid-March, both trade union secretary Regula Pauli and I will be present. Further info will follow.
PEKO Elections at Swiss
A new round of voting was needed for the supplementary PEKO elections at Swiss. Our two members Nicole Neuenhöfer and Sava Nestorov have agreed to run once again. Thank you! The elections will take place from 24 February to 13 March 2025.
New Trusted Representatives
At its meeting in January, the SEV-GATA Managing Committee unanimously elected two new trusted representatives: Patrick Kern and Luis Rodrigues. Patrick was also elected to the Swissport ZRH negotiating delegation. Congratulations, we look forward to working with you!
